Wildlife crossings give our dwindling wildlife a helping hand in their migratory movements. The UK has had roads sliced through the landscape since the Romans and wildlife has had to make do and brave the perilous motorways just to graze. 4000 animals are reported to be killed on our roads between 2016- 2017 which is an avoidable statistic. The first animal bridges sprung up in France in the 1950s. In fact, Europe is a leader in the sector. The Netherlands alone has 66 overpasses and ecoducts that protect its populations of badgers, boars, and deer. They can also boast of having the world’s longest wildlife overpass. The massive Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo is a half-mile long, crossing a rail line, river, business park, and sports complex. If the UK implements some wildlife bridges on our roads we may see a rapid decline in roadkill and insurance claims. This means less wildlife death and lower car insurance for all of us.
